“Great Time at Breezes” I have just spent a very enjoyable week at Breezes Runaway Bay (from 9/20 to 9/27). This was my first trip to the resort and Jamaica, but I am already planning a return visit…yes, it was that good!
I was a little concerned about the hurricane season and going by myself; as it turned out, I should not have worried. Overall, the weather was very nice, every morning greeted me with bright sunshine and light breeze, then around 2-3 pm clouds would roll in and we would have a brief shower, then the sun came out again. As for traveling by myself, it was very easy to meet other people, so I never felt lonely. Plus, all staff members were extremely friendly and really made me feel welcome. I can’t say enough about all those hard-working people – from Management and Guest Relations (Nastascia, Sandra, Celene), to bartenders (yo, big Nick!), to entertainment coordinators (Kendice and Cassandra, the best dancers), and Jamaicans in general – you are the nicest people, thank you for making my stay so pleasant!
Travel to/from resort This part was very smooth. Flying Air Jamaica was great – it was a direct 3-hour flight, we left right on time, and they not only served real breakfast but also offered free champagne in economy class! After a quick rest at the SuperClubs lounge at Sangster Airport, I was led to my transfer bus, the ride along the ocean was quite scenic, and less than 1.5 hours later I was at the resort. Going back home was similarly easy (although I was sad to leave, oh well…).
Check-in/Room I arrived before noon, so my room was not yet ready. I spent the waiting time by walking around the resort and grabbing a drink and a bite to eat at the Reggae Café. When I came back to the front desk at 2 pm, my room was ready. When I booked the trip, I had made several room requests, and I was very happy to see that they were all honored. My “deluxe” category room was excellent: huge marble-tiled bathroom, flat screen TV, sofa, desk, lots of drawers, balcony with a nice view. The room was always clean, and no bugs (except for a few mosquitoes).
The grounds In a word – lovely! Not as spectacular as some resorts in Mexico’s Riviera Maya, but still very very nice and well maintained. The property is much smaller than the Mexican and Dominican resorts I’ve been to before, so it had a more cozy feel to it, and you could easily walk it without getting tired.
The Beach/Ocean To me, this is the most important part of any resort, and Breezes comes out on top here. Beautiful white sand beach and the BEST ocean I’ve ever seen – clear, warm, calm – I could have spent hours in it if I weren’t afraid of getting sunburned. They had nice pools too, but I never used them, spending all of my time on the beach.
Food/Drinks I ate breakfast, lunch, and a couple of dinners at the open-air buffet restaurant with a nice ocean view. The buffet stations offered plenty of choices, and while the lunch and dinner selections were just about average, you would never leave hungry, that’s for sure. At the same time, all three specialty restaurants were really excellent! I had dinners twice at Pastafari (italian), twice at Munasan (japanese), and once at the Starlight Grill (mongolian stir fry) – both service and food were top-notch.
Activities/Entertainment There is something for everyone. The list of included water sports is the most extensive I’ve seen, including Hobbie Cat rides, water skiing, glass bottom boat, kayaks, snorkeling trips, even free scuba diving (not my thing, but many people I talked to raved about it). I really enjoyed snorkeling by the reefs right next to the shore – throw some bread in the water and watch the fish fight for it. The entertainment crew (I got to know Kendice, Cassandra, Crazy Chris, and Jason) keeps things lively throughout the day with games and contests. In the evening you can enjoy a nightly show, piano sing-along, karaoke twice a week, or shake it up at the Hurricanes disco.
Customer Service Last but not least, I was quite impressed with quality of customer service. If you have a problem or concern, talk to Guest Relations and they will do what they can to resolve it. The famous Sandra Holness, Guest Relations Manager, went on vacation the day I arrived, but she left behind a lovely young lady, Nastascia, who more than capably stepped into Sandra’s shoes. Nastascia did a great job ensuring that things run smoothly for the guests; she personally called me several times during my stay to make sure I was enjoying my stay, and she was always a pleasure to talk to.
Overall Great first experience with Jamaica in general, and Breezes Runaway Bay in particular. I think you can’t go wrong with this well-run and fun resort. I will return very soon, ya mon! |
