“CocoLaPalm Lived Up to Expectations”

I stayed at CocoLaPalm for 5 nights on my honeymoon last week. We stayed in a Superior Room, which looked almost exactly like the website pictures. The vibe of the room was definitely of a Ramada Inn or very upscale Motel 6, but we weren’t paying for ambiance. The room had two beds with three pillows each. I found the bed and pillows to be adequate. We also had air-conditioning that worked well and a minifridge. We had no problems with bugs in the room other than when we left a sugary drink out of the fridge, which attracted some ants.

Our room was located near the pool. At checkin I had requested a quiet room, and in general the room was quiet, HOWEVER on the first night there was a very very LOUD wedding reception. It probably had about 100 people and the deejay was extremely loud and there were a lot of speeches. It probably would not have mattered where we were located, it was so loud. I think it was over a little past 11:00, but it still seemed unfair to guests to be subjected to that. Additionally, we couldn’t use the pool that evening due to the wedding. I talked to several other guests who mentioned having to turn up the volume of the t.v. to full blast in an unsuccessful attempt to drown out the wedding noise.

We had vouchers for continental breakfast each morning. The continental included breads, juices, and some pastries. Almost every day we upgraded for $2-4 for a hot breakfast. We found the breakfast to be a great deal and the service was good, except for the day we came right after it opened at 7:30 AM. I noticed in general if you came close to opening anywhere in Jamaica you were probably in for a wait. We only did other meals at the hotel once, we ordered a room service lunch, and it was quite affordable for what we got and reasonably good. I think we had two colas, jerk chicken, and a burger with fries for 25 dollars (room service price). The bar had reasonable specials every night but was a bit sterile as far as socialization went. Our favorite restaurants on the beach were Norma’s at SeaSplash, Kuyaba, and Lobster House at Sunrise Club was woodfired pizza.

The best part of the resort was the beach. It really was the best or near it in all of Negril. There was plenty of shade, which many resorts lacked. We walked by Couples Swept Away and could not believe how few areas of shade they had. Coco, in contrast, had many trees to sit under. However, the chairs were not quite as nice as at other resorts, but they were plentiful. The pools were pretty good, especially the hot tub. The reviewer who noted that they appeared to be from the 1970s was pretty accurate, but it was nothing that a coat of paint couldn’t fix. The age of the pools did not really bother me though, and I loved being able to use a pool right on the beach. The beach towel situation was a bit odd, you had to trade in your towels to get fresh ones, and sometimes the stand wouldn’t be open, but I imagine that it is due to some type of problem they have had in the past.

We enjoyed having a tv to watch the Olympics, and apparently got more stations than many other resorts.

The reception staff at the resort was very good, but the wait staff at times seemed a bit disinterested. We were especially impressed with how quickly the front desk would answer our questions and help us in whatever way they could.

I think we would come back to Coco but would upgrade to a beachfront or suite room. The room we had was certainly adequate in every way but I think having a personal deck to lounge on would have kicked it up even higher. We were generally pleased with Coco, other than the slightly outdated décor and the loud wedding. It was what we were promised on the website other than those few minor issues, and I think that counts for a lot!
