Kingston Jamaica Hotels & Resorts JetBlue Airways has announced plans to begin new service to Kingston, Jamaica -- its 14th international destination -- this fall.
The airline expects to serve Kingston's Norman Manley International Airport with daily nonstop service to/from New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport, with onward connecting service available to cities across the United States. JetBlue's flights to the Jamaican capital are expected to go on sale in June , subject to receipt of government operating authority.
Kingston will be JetBlue's second destination in Jamaica. The airline has already begun daily nonstop service between New York (JFK) and Montego Bay on the north coast of the island, rounding out a robust lineup of Caribbean destinations. Later this year, JetBlue expects to once again expand in the West Indies with the addition of flights to Barbados and Saint Lucia, also subject to receipt of government operating authority.
Kingston, the largest English-speaking city in the Caribbean, is the capital of Jamaica and its cultural, industrial, and financial center. It's home to more than 660,000 people, including those living on the plains between the Blue Mountains and the sea. The buildings here are a mixture of modern, graceful, old, and just plain ramshackle. The bustling port is evocative of one in Africa, with a natural harbor that's among the largest in the world. The University of the West Indies has its campus on the edge of the city. Few other cities in the Caribbean carry as many negative connotations as Kingston, thanks to widely publicized reports of violent crime, congestion, bad roads, and difficult-to-decipher traffic signs. But it is also here that you find Jamaica at its most urban and confident, most witty and exciting, most challenging. No other place in Jamaica offers so many bars, clubs, or cultural outlets. And no other place in Jamaica has such a concentration of creative artists and opinions. “So worth it!!!!” Bob Marley MuseumWe took the trip from Ocho Rios. It was a long and at points scary ride but so beautiful and so worth it. We had our waiter from the Sandals resort drive us and act as a guide. When we arrived we were pretty much surrounded by the locals trying to sell us pot or take the pot fields tour. Once we entered the gate we notice we were the only ones there. We took off our shoes and Yokko was our guide (love the laugh!!!) He told us great stories and sang to us. When we went into Bob's single room I have to say I cried. Yokko started singing "with the roof right over his head" and I just got so emotional. We also had a joint break on the famous rock which was really cool. After the tour we did decide to do the pot field tour and I would not recommend it. I was sort of scared as we were surrounded by the locals both in front of us and in back. Bring dollar bills for the kids. They are so cute and sang to us as we left. I felt bad that I only had 20's on me. I will never forget this experience. I'm so glad we made the trip. |

When you've had enough of the city, escape to the Blue Mountains at the northern edge of the city. There is no more beautiful mountain chain in the West Indies. The hills are at their most stunning and evocative when a blue mist hovers over them. The Blue Mountains are most famously associated with a celebrated coffee bean, but they're also full of trails, rivers, waterfalls, bird life, fruit, and even marijuana. Don't expect superhighways: The roads are terrible. Luckily, the best way to appreciate this amazing scenery is by foot -- though only if you're very fit Kingston's tropical climate fluctuates little throughout the year. Average temperatures vary by a few degrees from the lower 80s (27 C) in January and February, to the mid-80s in June through October. What does change dramatically is the amount of rainfall the city receives. This can vary from as much as seven inches of rain in October, to less than one inch of rain each in the months of January and February. Jamaicans will tell you that rains are brief and usually followed by sunshine, and that overcast days are rare.
Hurricanes Jamaica is technically in the Caribbean hurricane belt, but sees very few actual hurricanes. In the last fifty years, the island has averaged about one hurricane per decade. Peak Season and Off Season One of the biggest factors in deciding when to go to Jamaica is that during the peak season hotels are booked months in advance, everything is more expensive, and the island is packed with tourists. Consider going in the off season, when resort rates drop thirty to fifty percent. The peak season is in the winter, from December 15 to April 14.
