The Dominican Republic's third-largest city is in the country's southeast. Offering both an upscale vacation resort, Casa de Campo, and Altos de Chavon - an artists' village designed in 15th-century Med-style, this sugar refinery settlement on the river Chavon offers a cosmopolitan take on the Tropics. Taino Indian artifacts are on show at the Archaeological Museum, while eclectic shops hawk wares in Altos de Chavon. Take a boat trip to visit the shooting locations of "Apocalypse Now" and "Rambo."

“Altos De Chavon is more than an "attraction"”

What is so sad is that of all of these people visiting and reviewing Altos, most don't even bother to learn what Altos De Chavon is - rather they are disappointed by their less than "authentic" tourist attraction.

Altos De Chavon is a Cultural Center Foundation, with a Museum of Archaeology, a Gallery, an Artist in Residence Program, AND a School of Design. Students choosen for the School of Design are put through a rigorous admissions process and only the most talented art students from South & Central Americas and the Caribbean are accepted - at little or no cost. This is an extraodinary foundation for some of the poorest countries with very few opportunties for artists.

I visited the school several years ago and I was so inspired by the talent and charisma of the students and teachers of Altos.

“Crazy Wheels is the best excursion!”

We stayed at the Coral Canoa which is in La Romana. You shouldn't miss this tour especially staying here because it is really close...
This was by far our favorite excursion and we did a few... This one is great because it gives you a change of scenery from the beach.
We started out driving thru the countryside, villages, sugarcane fields, a pit stop for some fresh fruit and great art, and down to the Chavon river.
This excursion is really exciting and adventerous.
We were the only English speakers on our tour (french and italian) and they have guides that will speak in virtually any language... We were lucky enough to have our own private English speaking guide who was great. He told so much information about the country the sugar cane business and his own story. Don't forget to tip the guides!
We drove thru a village to see how some of the most poor people live. It really makes you appreciate the luxuries that we take for granted. BE CAREFUL because the children in the village will dart out in front of you to ask for candy or money. The people in front of us threw some candy to the kids and they jumped out the get it and almost got plowed over by the other ATV's.
The stop at the river was great! Some people went swimming and it was a nice break.
BEWARE: YOU WILL GET DIRTY!!!!! The terrain is rough and if its been raining, there are puddles everywhere... Its all part of the fun but my tennis shoes were ruined even after trying to wash them at the hotel after the tour.... Bring some beat up tennis shoes that you are willing to toss after the tour.
THIS ACTIVITY IS NOT TO MISS IF YOU WANT TO SEE THE REAL DOMINICAN REPUBLIC!
take a look at my pics to see our CRAZY WHEELS excursion.
