Punta Cana, on the eastern tip of the Dominican Republic, is what Caribbean postcards are made of: twenty-five miles of white sand, swaying coconut trees and more than 35 resorts (which by law cannot be taller than a palm tree). European tourists long ago discovered Punta Cana and Americans are now catching on. At this affordable tropical getaway, most guests choose to stay in all-inclusive resorts. The town itself isn't a tourist draw; the primary purpose of Punta Cana is relaxation by the sea.

Punta Cana is considered the major resort area in the Dominican Republic. Several professional golf courses have been built in the region.

The nightlife inside the resorts is very lively. Outside of the hotels, several small plazas and discotheques allow tourists to interact with local residents. Other tourist attractions have also been installed in the area, among them Manatí Park (a waterpark), Plaza Bolera Punta Cana (a shopping mall and bowling center), a Marina, and the Palma Real Shopping Center in Bávaro, housing well known facilities such as Hard Rock Cafe and Tony Romas. Saona Island, located nearby, is popular for scuba diving.

“Great Tour, Fun & Educational”

Bavaro Runners Safari Adventures

We were met at the hotel by our driver and our guide, Alberto, right on time. Alberto was very knowledgeable and fluent in several languages. The drive through a variety of towns was at times hair raising but always interesting. We picked up a videographer along the way. (At the end of the trip you can buy a DVD of your tour. We didn't buy it but if you intend to spend the $35 US it costs it would be a good idea to let him know as you'll probably feature a lot more in the film). Driving through the countryside was very interesting. We went well off the beaten path and toured a typical village and village school, a home way up in the mountains, and a small ranch as well. The school was amazing. The kids were all dressed in school uniforms and were so polite and cheerful. Bring along some school supplies - we did and the kids really appreciated it. We were a little like the Pied Piper as we passed through the village with kids following us asking for pens, pencils, erasers, etc. I also brought some baseball caps which disappeared quickly and seemed much appreciated. (One thing I would do differently - hang onto some stuff for later - when you get into the sugar cane fields you will find some children who seem to be in much more dire need and it would have been nice to have something for them.) Our home visit was charming, a very nice, very old woman lived in the home we visited. Again, we wished we'd hung onto something for her, she was so very nice. We saw coffee beans growing in the yard, tons of flowers, a cherry tree (from which we were fed fresh cherries) and a breadfruit tree. Our guide talked to us about day to day life in the Dominican. It was very interesting. At the ranch we had a short horseback ride, a lunch of chicken, meatballs, rice, spaghetti, rolls, etc and a demonstration of roasting coffee beans and making cocoa from fresh cacao beans, Again, very interesting. We saw 2 different kinds of humming birds, literally dozens of tiny lizards, and a couple of incredibly cute puppies. We alos spent a little time lounging in some hammocks that were strung up in the shade After we left the ranch and descended a very steep hillside we visited a souvenir shop. We couldn't find anything we liked and found the staff to be pushy and rude. It was the only part of this tour that was less than top notch. Our last stop was Macao Beach, the last public beach in Punta Cana. It was gorgeous!!! Smooth soft white sand, lovely water, and a beautiful view of cliffs to the side of the beach. If you want to see a little bit of the Dominican outside the resorts then take this trip. It cost $75 per person and was worth every penny of it. One thing to be aware of is the weather forecast - we had a nice sunny day and it was a pleasure to be driving, the breeze was very cooling. this trip could be hellish if it was raining hard. The side of the bus would be closed in and it would be crazy hot! Not to mention I can't imagine how you would make it over some of the roads (or should I say trails) if there was lots of water.
