Runaway Bay Jamaica Introduction

Runaway Bay Hotels & Resorts

This part of Jamaica's North Coast has several distinctions: It was the first part of the island seen by Columbus, the site of the first Spanish settlement on the island, and the point of departure of the last Spaniards leaving Jamaica following their defeat by the British.

Nude Nuptials -- At the Hedonism III resort, couples who want to see what they're getting before they tie the knot can be married in their birthday suits. Instead of a gown and a tuxedo, suntan lotion is recommended so that any body parts, already exposed, might not become overexposed, at least to the sun. After the "I do's" are said, the happy couple can head for the honeymoon suite at this adults-only all-inclusive.

Beaches & Watersports -- The two best beaches at Runaway Bay are Paradise Beach and Cardiff Hall Public Beach. Both wide, white-sand strips are clean and well maintained -- ideal spots for a picnic. If you're staying in Ocho Rios and want to escape the crowds, come here. You don't get a lot of facilities, however, so you'd better bring along whatever you need.

The waters are calm almost all year. Prevailing trade winds will keep you cool in the mornings and late afternoon. Because there are no lifeguards, be especially careful if you're with children.

Runaway Bay Taxis & Rental Cars

With gorgeous sun-drenched beaches you probably won’t want to go anywhere, but in case, you have the option of several taxi services. Most of the resorts can arrange for a cab, but you’re likely to have to call for a taxi ahead of time. They can generally pick you up within 20 minutes however. But if you’re heading out to dinner or taking in the sights, you should probably arrange for a return ride as well.

And while most taxis have meters, the drivers rarely, if ever, use them. As a result you should negotiate the price, including currency, before you get in the cab. Metered fares should be posted inside the taxi, and you can ask the driver for one if you don’t see it. The drivers are also ready to negotiate, so feel free to push for that hard sell. They’re use to tourists who will offer a very small amount, so their first price is often double what they’ll accept.

Fares are about $20US for every 10 miles or so, but can be much higher if you’re using a taxi that is licensed to a hotel. Tips are also often considered part of the agreed upon fare, but for good service you could give an additional tip. On metered fares, a tip between 10 and 12 percent is the standard.

Additionally, you can rent a car, and most of the major rental providers are located at Montego Bay’s Sangster Internation Airport, including Hertz, Island, Budget International, Sunbird, Avis and Champagne Car. Cars are also available for rent at most of the larger resorts.

If you’re planning on exploring the countryside of the island, or venturing to the smaller towns consider an SUV to help you overcome some of the island’s harsh road conditions. Likewise, you should ask ahead of time whether the car is air-conditioned, which is considered a necessity in the summer heat.

An American driver’s license is valid for one year in Jamaica, and drivers must be 21 or older. In Jamaica they drive on the left side of the road (English style) with the steering wheels on the right. And be prepared to give up the right of way for livestock!

Runaway Bay offers some of the best snorkeling in Jamaica. The reefs are close to shore and extremely lively with marine life, including enormous schools of tropical fish such as blue chromis, triggerfish, small skate rays, and snapper. You can also go diving. Jamaica Dive Center, at the Club Ambiance resort (tel. 876/973-4845), has as its slogan: "We Be Divin'." The dive facility takes you to one of several protected reefs where the currents aren't dangerous, and where fishing boats are required to stay at least 82m (600 ft.) away from divers and snorkelers. The dive outfitter offers everything from one-tank dives to six-boat packages. All equipment needed can be rented on-site. A one-tank dive costs $42, a two-tank dive costs $75.

Golf -- SuperClubs Runaway Golf Club (tel. 876/973-7319) charges no admission for guests staying at any of Jamaica's affiliated SuperClubs. For nonguests, the price is $80 year-round. Any player can rent carts for $35 for 18 holes; clubs are $14 for 18 holes.

“A cool visit to the caves!!”

Green Grotto Caves

We visited Green Grotto Caves on one of our trips to Jamaica. It was not a long drive as we were staying at RDCC nearby in Runaway Bay.

It was neat to see the tree roots underground hanging in the caves and all the crystals, lime, and rock formations that have developed over time.

Our guide was very informative and he explained all about the caves, the vegetation , and all the little critters that live in the caves. He also explained that all the fish in the lake at the bottom of the caves are all blind as it is always dark. The fish have never seen daylight so over time their eyes have filmed over.
You are constantly walking down hill as it is many feet below sea level. The guides point out rock, crystal, and lime formations that actually are shaped like faces & animals. The dripping and running water has caused them over the years have taken shapes that are pretty cool to see (also a good imagination helps you to see them---LOL).

Our guide also told us that a famous James Bond movie was filmed in the cave. The lake was used for a submarine scene--the submarine was taken into the caves and down to the lake in pieces where it was all built back together and put into the water for the movie scenes to be shot.

I would not go a second time there but it is definitely a must see at least once while in Jamaica.
