Apple Vacations Online Quotes & Availability “Thrilled with Sunset at the Palms!” My husband and I were looking for an all-inclusive vacation to relax and rest. We live in Cayman so, it is tough to find a great vacation place when you live in one. But, you have to get away from home to relax, no matter where you live! We found the reviews on this site very positive for Sunset at the Palms in Negril and booked. Just got back today and we were so impressed. I know that this review will be long but I am just so happy about the trip!!
We booked through Travelocity and I didn't print the voucher for the shuttle ($70 round trip for 2 of us) but the girls at the airport who arrange the transport were so helpful, they let me get on their computer and print the voucher and we were on our way. The shuttle ride from Montego Bay took about 1 hour and 15 minutes and the driver was very informative and the ride was enjoyable.
When we entered the resort, it was just s nice as all of the photos that I saw on their website and on this site. Beautiful furnishings, very open and so many beautiful plants and flowers. Oh, and lots of friendly hello's and smiling faces! Because of the flight times, we arrived at the resort at 10:30am and knew that the room would not be ready and they were apologetic, but not their fault, check-in is at 2pm. We were greeted with the cool towels and punch, complete withe the fancy glass and a fresh pineapple wedge (which was very refreshing) and were given the resort overview. They showed us to an area where we could change and were then able to enjoy the resort. We wandered around the grounds a bit and were amazed at all of the lush, green plants and beautiful flowers as well as how immaculately kept they all were. The "tree top" rooms were really set up nicely and well maintained. Then we went over to the beach, which is across the street. They have a crossing guard and there was construction going n across the street so there were a lot of people around but once we crossed and were back inside the gate, the beach was really nice. There is a huge bar and a grill area (great snapper and fries!) We sat and had lunch and drinks and then laid on the beach to enjoy the sun!
We checked back at 2 and the room was ready.... just as great as the pictures. The patio has windows and french doors but the other windows in the room had screens and wooden shutters so we worried if the A/C would cool the room enough. But,the A/C worked perfect and we even had to adjust it because we got too cold! The big drawback of no windows was the sound issue (our only complaint of the entire trip). Unfortunately, we were in room 620 which was right near the road and the construction which went from 7am until 5-7pm. We were told that this construction will be completed in December so the noise of the jack hammers and concrete saws will stop, but the loud cars, music and honking will remain if you are close to the street. Then at sundown until sun up, there were lots of insect, cricket and lizard noise. Most of this sounded like crickets, cicadas and locusts but there was something that made occasional high pitched alarm clock sounds..... not horribly disturbing.... very "outdoorsy" sounding, but windows would have helped.
The staff were all AMAZING!!!! They could not have been more helpful, cheerful, fun or accommodating. They really work hard to keep the guests happy and it works! We did give out some tips to show our appreciation ......not a lot but they were very appreciative of it. We thought the tipping was appropriate but we never felt like they were expecting or waiting for a tip.
The food was really good and they had a great variety. We never tried the Lotus restaurant because it seemed to have a similar menu as the buffets and the staff on the buffet dining room was so good, you didn't feel the need to order from a menu to get special service. We'd go through the buffet and then someone was there to take our plates and guide us to a table, pull out your chair, place your napkin in your lap and take your drink order. Because this is a small resort, there was never a line and there was always plenty of hot, yummy food (great variety for anyone). The drinks were awesome too. There was definitely no skimping on the liquor either. If you asked for extra of anything, they poured and asked you to tell them when to stop. The juices were fresh and the bartenders were creative. I'd tell them to surprise me and was always happy (try a Caribbean Sky.... YUMMY or Omar's special!). They also remembered what you liked and would keep your cup full if you were sitting at the bar. We didn't bring the big mugs like some suggested and didn't feel like we needed them.... besides, it was fun to try lots of different drinks and the big cups would limit you!
In addition to the breakfast, lunch and dinner, (with long hours) they also had snacks and tea/coffee at the pool bar each evening and one night they had a pre-dinner party in the martini bar .... great chicken wings and spicy shrimp!
We didn't choose to do any excursions or use the spa, just ate, drank and relaxed! The excursions and spa services were offered but never pushed and we never felt pressured. When we were on the beach, there were some people who'd come by and ask if we needed "anything"..... "what can I do for you today" but were polite and moved on when you said that you were great and didn't need anything.
They have a 24 hour internet room but only one computer in to share. I was able to use it daily though to keep up with e-mail to be sure everything was ok at home. I did find out later though that there is wireless in the lobby if you have your laptop.
HUGE thanks to Gerry, Greg, Givan, Omar at the bar and Omar the gardener, Garth and Leo.....amazing!!! When you get there, tell them that Melissa & David from Cayman said Hi!
We would go back to Sunset at the Palms in a heartbeat (and plan to) but, I'd ask for a quieter room in the center of the resort. |
